Harry and William rocked by shock family death
Lord Robert Fellowes, uncle to Prince Harry and Prince William, has died at 82. Although not related to Princess Diana, he was the Queen’s private secretary from 1990 to 1999, supporting her through tough times, including the tumultuous year of 1992 when Windsor Castle burned, and royal marriages fell apart.
Born at Sandringham House in 1941, Fellowes attended Eton College and served briefly in the Scots Guards before working as a banker. In 1977, he joined the Royal Household, eventually becoming private secretary to the Queen in 1990.
Fellowes, who was married to Princess Diana’s sister, Lady Jane Fellowes, reflected on Diana after her death, saying, “I was very fond of her… It was hard for her to be happy.”
He was honored with the Queen Elizabeth II Version of the Royal Household Long and Faithful Service Medal in 1997 and was made a Baron in 1999, introducing him to the House of Lords. He and Lady Jane had three children.
