Embracing Your Uniqueness: What My Mother Taught My Son and Daughter-in-Law
I’ve learned that age doesn’t matter now that I’m 75. To live your life to the fullest and love what makes you different. For me, that’s putting on red lipstick, which stands for my life force and vigor. It made my son and his wife look bad, though, so I knew I had to teach them a lesson.
The cruel things they said made me angry. I chose to show them that I wouldn’t follow what everyone else does. I thought of a bold thing to do and said it at the yearly block party. I wore a bright red dress, a hat with a wide brim, and bold makeup, including my favorite red lipstick.
I could see the shock and shame on their faces as I walked down the street. But I took charge of that moment, waving and kissing everyone. I was in charge of the parade and stood in the middle.
After the parade, I talked to them and taught them something important. “Don’t waste your time following other people’s rules. Someone getting hurt is their problem, not mine. I’ll do what makes me happy.
What I said touched someone. They said they were sorry and understood how their words had hurt people. I let them off the hook because I knew they were still young and learning.
As the sun went down, I saw them think about what they had done. They understood it wasn’t just about lipstick; it was about loving and respecting yourself for who you are, no matter what age you are.
At that very moment, I knew I had taught them something important. One that would always be with them.
